Living here in far North Queensland, we are lucky enough to have some of Oz’s most consistent white water rafting river rapids right on our doorstep. In fact there isn’t another place in Australia that can claim that they have commercial white water rafting trips running on 4 local rivers.
The rivers that are located close by are the Barron River, Tully River, Johnston River and Russell Rivers, as well as many seasonal runs that only are accessible in the wet season. This definately must make White Water Rafting in Cairns something to write home about. The Barron River Whitewater rafting and Tully River Whitewater Rafting run using whats commonly referred to as controlled release. This happens when the water is set free at a set time from an upriver catchment or Power Generation Station. These two are easily our most popular rivers with both full and half day tours departing daily. The Barron River has grades 2-3 rapids while the Tully has a more challenging grade of 3 to 4 and even 5 after rain.
The Johnstone River runs just after out wet season, however offers Heli Rafting extended trips with up to Grade 5 rapids. This expedition is kind of not for the faint hearted.
The Russel River offers blow up 2 man sportsrafts, although a bit different from the 8 man inflatable rafts, they are still loads of fun and simple to use. This river does unfortunately require a short trek in to the launch zone through some untouched rainforest. The Russel River has rapids in the range of grade 2-3 with maybe a few grade 4’s in some sections.
All rafting takes place under the friendly guidance of highly certified river guides, and all tour operators hold the required Government certifications and Insurance. So there is nothing to worry about if you want to experience some white water rafting while on your break in the tropical north.
